Shaun Smith Continues To Provoke

For the second week in a row, Chiefs defensive end Shaun Smith had a hand in drawing a personal foul.  Against the Browns, Smith was accused of grabbing center Alex Mack below the belt, leading Mack to hit Derrick Johnson late.  Though Smith wasn’t fined for any wrongdoing last week, the 49ers are complaining of a similar incident.

“I think he got hit inappropriately,” Singletary said after the 49ers’ 31-10 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.  “After a while, there’s only so much you can take.  He (Davis) was wrong for retaliating and he knows that.”

Davis said Smith’s actions were, well, below the belt.

“He tried to feel me,” Davis said.  “That’s weird, right?”

The penalty came at a bad time for the 49ers, who trailed 10-3 early in the third quarter.  The 49ers had just converted a first down, but Davis’ penalty created a second-and-22 after the 49ers had gotten to midfield.

The league didn’t fine Smith, meaning they couldn’t see anything on the game tape to prove he was involved in funny business below the belt.  But now that a second team is complaining about the same exact thing, look for the powers that be to take a lot closer look at the matchup between Smith and Davis.

I have no idea if there was anything going on with Smith, but I don’t blame Davis for being frustrated.  He was probably tired of getting beat by Smith and owned by Tamba Hali.
